Anatomy of a Roof

Every layer that keeps water out.

A roof isn't a single product — it's a system of eighteen coordinated components. When any one of them is missed, mis-lapped, or under-nailed, the whole assembly leaks. Here's what actually goes on your house.

Labeled diagram showing the parts of a residential roof: ridge, hip, valley, skylight, chimney flashing, gable, fascia, eave, drip edge, rain gutter, flat roof, flashing, downspout, dormer, abutment, soffit, sidewall
The parts of a residential roof — the same components Vest Construction inspects, repairs, and replaces on Atlanta-area homes.
Ridge
The horizontal peak where two roof planes meet at the top — the highest line on the roof.
Hip
The external angle where two sloped roof planes meet, running from the ridge down to the eave.
Hipped Edge
The sloped edge along a hip roof where the hip meets the fascia line.
Valley
The internal angle where two roof planes meet — the highest-volume water path on your roof.
Gable / Rake
The sloped edge of a roof at the end of a gable wall, running from the eave up to the ridge.
Gable End
The triangular wall section enclosed by two sloping roof lines at the end of a pitched roof.
Eave
The lower edge of the roof that overhangs the exterior wall and channels water into the gutter.
Drip Edge
Metal flashing along the eaves and rakes that directs water away from the fascia and into the gutter.
Fascia
The horizontal trim board behind the gutter — anchor point for gutter hangers and the finish line of the roof edge.
Soffit (underside)
The finished underside of the eaves that closes off and vents the attic.
Rain Gutter
Continuous aluminum channel along the eave that collects water shed from the roof.
Downspout
Vertical channel that carries collected water from the gutter safely away from the foundation.
Flashing
Sheet-metal barrier installed at joints and edges to divert water away from vulnerable seams.
Chimney Flashing
Layered step and counter-flashing that seals the joint where the chimney passes through the roof.
Skylight
A framed, flashed glazing unit set into the roof plane to bring natural light into interior rooms.
Dormer
A framed structure projecting from a sloped roof, usually with its own window and roof planes.
Abutment
The joint where a sloped roof plane meets a vertical wall — always flashed to keep water out.
Sidewall
The vertical exterior wall of the home that a roof plane abuts against.
Flat Roof
A low-slope roof section — typically on additions, porches, or commercial buildings — that uses membrane rather than shingles.
